Difference between Heat Pumps and Furnaces

Air-source heat pumps are so efficient because unlike furnaces they do not actively burn fuel in order to provide heat; instead, they pull heat from one source and move it into another (from outside to inside during the winter, and from inside to outside during the summer). Air-source heat pumps still can provide heat when the outside air feels cold - even when the temperature is as low as 25 degrees! While Maryland and Washington, DC average 34 degrees in the winter, a backup heater can be installed for when temperatures drop below that.

Benefits of Air-Source Heat Pumps

Air-source heat pumps can be used either to heat radiators or to provide radiant heating through the floors. These heat pumps can also provide basically free hot water, making them some of the most efficient heat sources available. New innovations in air-source heat pump technology include Reverse Cycle Chillers (RCC), which eliminate the periodic blowing of cool air that most air-source heat pumps do during their defrost cycles. RCC also enables air-source heat pumps to operate at much lower temperatures, with one system providing 115 degree hot water through the system even though the outside temperature was negative 15 degrees! Air-source heat pumps with RCC work by using heat from the air to warm water in a large storage tank which then cycles through the floor and provides radiant heat.
