When Should You Call for a Furnace Replacement?

Are you unsure if your unit simply needs to be repaired or if it needs to be replaced? The average life expectancy of a furnace in homes is between 10 and 15 years. If your furnace is close to this age or older and is having problems throughout the season, it may be time for a replacement.

There are several other signs to look out for that signal it is time for a replacement:

  • Utility bills are higher than normal – this could mean your unit is not running efficiently and using more electricity or gas than needed.
  • System needs repair several times throughout a season – if your furnace is costing you more in repairs, it may be more cost effective to replace it.
  • Furnace is making strange noises – if your heating system is making strange noises, it could mean that it is towards the end of its life.
  • Burner flame is yellow instead of blue – this could mean your furnace is creating carbon monoxide. If this happens, call 911 and exit the house immediately. Contact your local HVAC contractor to replace the unit before turning it back on.

If you notice any of these signs, contact Michael Bonsby HVAC, Plumbing & Electrical for a full diagnosis and to assess if replacing your unit is right for you.
