Here’s something we love to see: seniors in the HVAC-R program at San Joaquin Valley College in California, eager to get their hands dirty and develop some real experience in the HVAC install world, recently turned their final exam on its head—in a good way!
“They were clamoring to get their knuckles bruised, turn the wrenches and use all of the nuts and bolts to troubleshoot unit malfunctions,” said Division Manager, Eric Lindberg. “So, Josh Debrie and Robby Gill, our very enterprising HVAC-R instructors, challenged their students to create a simulated trainer board, which could take them through a variety of potential break-down and repair scenarios.”
What’s so great about an HVAC trainer board?
HVAC trainer boards can be programmed to simulate problems with various aspects of HVAC systems, including electrical, refrigeration, heating, and AC components. They are extremely helpful in training, especially as constantly emerging technologies make the use of computer-simulated trainers more and more common.
“Our HVAC instructors looked around and saw all of the components needed to build our own trainer board,” said Lindberg.
“Those parts included a compressor, condenser coils, electrical panels, valves, gauges and other components that would test everything on one board,” said Robby Gill, one of the instructors. “We could configure it to trouble-shoot many different unit issues.”
The seniors were tasked with designing and building the board as part of their Capstone project—the last hands-on assessment before they entered the work world.
They spent a few weeks building up their trainer completely from scratch.
“The new trainer board puts HVAC students through intensive and creative hands-on problem-solving, and gives instructors an innovative way to measure student skill levels,” said Gill.
In addition to acing their Capstone project, the senior class created a valuable learning tool and an instruction legacy that will serve future HVAC-R classes at SJVC.
